Love this like - “I am thankful to have the choice of movement, but I’ll never be able to overlook the compromises that this part of the world asks me to make.” Beautiful.

Your work is really a form of resistance. In ways historically we could not move as freely, here you are, a Black woman hopscotching across the seas our ancestors chose to drown in because they were forced to move.

Ir also resonates the feeling of our parents or family looks at us as selfish when we operate in way they were never able too. Such a beautiful read thank you!

This is a well organized piece. When I read your writing I feel like I am floating on a lazy river - there’s no rush in the unfolding and I can truly enjoy the ride and scenery. (This is a compliment, I hope it is received as such 😂😅)

I don’t know Black British history so you’ve sent me on a deep dive of the Windrush generation.

Lastly, as someone who is also all about moving around the globe, I find the self-determination that comes with stepping into the unknown and coming out the otherside wiser, more confident, more clear -unburnt, is truly addictive. Thank you for the read, Amara.

I actually would love to share this link from the Black Cultural Archives (BCA) in Brixton - (Brixton is to London what Harlem is to NY I believe) - https://blackculturalarchives.org/learning

This is a Black telling of the narrative that should offer a real introduction. I believe you're Caribbean too so I am also referencing dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson whose poetry retells what it was like too be a young Caribbean/immigrant in London. His poetry is available on spoken on YT and also in book form. Enjoyyyy

UNBURNT! girl you really described it. It's the joy of finding myself all the way over here, well, thriving, full, safe in my aliveness that makes me want to keep trusting myself to go further. Showing others that it is very possible for us. When you dig into the history of the Windrush Generation you're in for a treat. There is a rich history of Caribbean settlement in the UK, not all of it is pleasant but it's full and it's still going so you'll have loads to enjoy.

Also absolutely, a slow, sweet river water story??? I take it as the highest compliment. THANK YOU

“We offered eye contact in case no one had looked at us with kindness that day, nodded and crossed roads, and made ourselves late for the sake of an introduction. These are friendships that start from the principle that you have ended up somewhere your family is not.” This is one of the most beautiful things about a nomadic life.

I’m very glad Marc Typo pointed me here. I look forward to more of this gorgeous writing.

This is beautifully expressed and wholeheartedly received...I often travel (currently in Costa Rica for a month), and to echo Marc, "the feeling of our parents or family looking at us as selfish when we operate in ways they were never able to"...rings so true because although we are cared for and supported by slogans like "live your best life"..."work on our craft"...it hits differently for those who have their own shoulda, coulda, woulda regrets. Thank you for sharing Amara.
